Long Overdue Update

My apologies for not posting for quite a while. There’s a lot to update you all on…

Meds first: Methotrexate is still working well. I had my one month follow up with Rheumatologist #1 last week; nothing exciting to tell. I’m waiting for the results of my bloodwork to come back so my doctor can determine if he needs to increase my dosage or not. If my CRP is at 5.0 or below (which is “normal”) and my liver panels come back within normal range (Methotrexate can cause liver damage) than I just need to do my “usual” monthly check-ups with him. Fingers crossed.

So, my vacation was much less a vacation and more of a giant cluster fuck. I did something to my neck about three or so weeks ago (slept on it wrong or something I assume) and I’ve had pain there, and in my left arm since. The plane ride to Vegas wasn’t exactly a comfortable one but it was manageable. The first day or two was mundane; getting used to the time change and doing my best to get rid of the neck and shoulder/arm pain. I had planned on visiting a few friends in the upcoming days as well as going shooting (my favorite desert activity), that however, was promptly stomped on. I woke up on day 3 in horrible pain in my neck and for whatever reason my left arm was extremely swollen. If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m one of those people that sucks up pain and discomfort until the pain is at a 9 or 10. I was at a 9 and knew something wasn’t right, so I called my PCP back home and she told me to go to the ER to make sure that there isn’t a blood clot. Who doesn’t love a trip to the ER when they’re on vacation?! I’ll spare you the bitching and complaining about the experience at the hospital and get down to the findings. I now have a nerve in my neck that’s narrowing which is causing the neck pain. No blood clots. They sent me packing with b.s. meds to hold me over until I returned home. I wasn’t allowed to drive and either in too much pain or asleep from the medication to do anything the rest of my vacation. On a scale from one to ten, this vacation was a 90 on the suck scale.

Fast forward to today. I returned from Las Vegas on March 28th and the neck and shoulder/arm pain hasn’t responded to anything. Heat, ice, medication, Icy Hot…nada. Time to go visit my PCP. I forgot to mention the oddest symptom I’ve been having with my arm; I can’t raise my arm to shoulder length or higher. I have zero strength in my bicep and tricep muscles. After talking to her about my trip, how I’ve been feeling since, yada yada; I get to have another lovely MRI performed. I was also given a generic, yet lovely sling to wear with the hopes that elevating my arm will help reduce the swelling. Nothing says SUPER COOL like an arm sling AND a medical alert necklace. I know you’re jealous…

I’ll give an update on my blood work results and the MRI findings as they come in.
